Coffee shop run by ex-Chez Panisse folks. Nice breakfast fare (especially the soft-boiled eggs), plus Acme Bread is next door. Espresso a tinge sour for me. Limited seating. I recommend.
Nice little cafe and wine bar with outdoor pergola. (No wifi)
Want to go eat gyoza here.
I think this might be one of my new favorite restaurants in SF. Beautiful interior that is at once Californian and Japanese. Lunch set was wonderful (+those gyoza!). Would love to return for dinner menu.
Nice and humble neighborhood pizzeria
Want to go. A friend says this is the cosiest and best date spot in SF - reminds her of a warmly-lit little Brooklyn neighborhood pizza spot.
Delicious Indian, more complexity and depth of flavor than you'd expect from such a casual outfit.
Really impressed by the flavor intensity and complexity. By far the best Indian flavors I've had since coming to SF. my only disappointment was that the wraps were closer to the tortilla end of the paratha-tortilla spectrum. I guess that's what they mean by their 'ethnic confusion' tag line...
Modern Chinese culinary emporium with a spacious set of communal tables to enjoy dumplings, Peking duck, and a variety of regional specialties, along with a fairly extensive tea selection and a full cocktail bar. Chinese specialty ingredients and kitchenwares available in a retail space adjacent to the dining room.

Want to go - challah, pita!
Pretty new bag store w French influences thanks to the years the owner/designer spent in Paris. Bags are all made in LA.
Want to go. Highly recommended Afghani.
Delivery-only (via Caviar) roast chicken and sides from the Tacolicious folks. Brought me flashbacks to roadside chicken and rice in the YucatĂĄn, in all the best ways. Photo via @mfchkn (Instagram).
Want to (order). Delivery roast chicken and sides.
New fast-casual (but upscale atmosphere) Eastern European from Bar Tartine owners the Ballas. Go now!

The rustic cool interior and creative menu make this a new anchor for Hayes Valley, and their consistently excellent execution makes it one of my favorite spots in the city. The pastas are notable. Great wine list and cocktails as well. Grab a seat at the bar if you can't snag a reservation; it's reserved for walk-ins and you can enjoy the full menu there.

Cuban sandwiches and snacks with a cute bright interior and nice vibe

Want to go (Afghani)
Merguez, squid, octopus was a standout, as was the treasure chest. Decent bathrooms, though wouldn't call them on-brand.
Excellent - family-style tasting menu. Particularly enjoyed the octopus with Pomegranate and broad beans.
Falafel + fries inside!

My favorite for facials in sf. One step into this hidden oasis and you're in blissđđ»
Beautiful little tucked-away place that does fabulous facials from their all-natural, organic skin care line.
"I've never had this before" is a common overheard term.
Really enjoyed their food at a pop-up at SFMoMA - would love to try the restaurant itself.
Go if you're from out of town and want to experience the SF café feel (earnest baristas, reclaimed wood, Edison bulbs galore). But avoid pastries, they're an embarrassment.
Family-run Vietnamese: good flavors, great prices, and amazing music.
Fresh, bright flavors, one of the best Vietnamese meals I've had in SF. Loved the mango salad and rolls w pork and pandan.
Want to go. Century-old Scandinavian hang out
Want to go. Highly recommended by a Nepali I met who's also a local chef.
Want to go. Recommended for Italian wines.
Want to go. Excellent coffee recommended by a local.
Beautiful new(ish) outpost of Blue Bottle. Love the old tiled floors and huge windows. Best on a weekend when the bankers have retreated, and a calm atmosphere reigns. Update: ambiance completely compromised by loud new bar across the lobby.
Want to go. Exhibitions plus well-regarded workshops for bookbinding and letter press.
My favorite new florist in SF.
Want to go. Local flowers, pretty arrangements.
Want to go. Apparently a great wine list.
Shanghai dumplings were amazing. Otherwise very decent dim sum.
Want to go. Apparently where the French hang out in the evenings. Good food and wine as well according to a regular.
Want to go. Arts complex in the Dogpatch with an admirable mission to house displaced SF galleries, provide affordable studio space, and provide office space for arts nonprofits like the SF Arts education project. Longer term goal to strengthen the city's contemporary art scene....kudos to the Rappaports for investing in this. *currently in a temp space on 3rd st, Minnesota st slated to open in March.
Want to go. Industrial arts school with very well-regarded classes. Mecca for makers in the East Bay. Check out open house on (some?) Saturdays.
Want to go. SF outpost of the Williamsburg original. Recommended by an exhibiting ceramicist at FOG for its pottery, furniture and design objects.
Want to go. Openings are apparently fun.
Agnolotti del plin. Come for lunch! Enjoy the beautiful marble and light-filled space.

A beautiful coastal view from the Marin headlands

Dough is superb - soft, fluffy, chewy.. Jon Darsky opened this brick and mortar in November 2015.
Want to go. Excellent crust according to trusted sources
Excellent Pakistani food. BYOB
Very good Pakistani - the closest I've found to a decent curry place in SF.
Nice homemade ice-cream, but really it's the freshly baked cones touched with cinnamon that make this place worth a visit.
Great spot for a glass of wine and some oysters, cheese or charcuterie. Sit by the window and enjoy the cable cars passing by...
Want to go. Sounds like a great place for a glass of wine and some charcuterie, with cable-car viewing just outside.
Dramatic coastline without even leaving city limits. Take the side trails down to the rock beaches and you might discover the stone labyrinth overlooking the Golden Gate.
Good cafe option in this neighborhood - bright, with a nice selection of salads, homey baked goods, and toasts on freshly baked bread. Fig walnut toast with ricotta and honey...
Historic building worth checking out before a drink at the Arguello (restaurant/bar with a great outdoor terrace).
One of my favorite restaurants; the more casual sister to Quince next door. Classic Italian cuisine in a welcoming space with clean lines and natural wood surfaces. Excellent pasta and pizza. Strikes an ideal balance for SF, which also makes it one of the toughest tables to get. Pictured: wild nettle sformata.
My new favorite Italian in SF. An emphasis on local ingredients and some more unusual pairings that verge on wider-Med influences (tomatoes, yogurt, pomegranate seeds...). Homemade pasta was excellent. Sit outside to enjoy the quiet, leafy street scene.
Factory showroom for traditional Californian ceramics. I love their selection of art and design books and magazines, perfectly placed across from a long, low couch. Blue bottle coffee, a lovely florist, and art gallery/exhibition space also in the same building makes it feel like a real community gathering spot.
Get 'The Plow' to experience it all. Go early and on a weekday to avoid the crazy long waits.
Really wonderful California-inspired Italian. Delicious polpette seasoned perfectly. The homemade pasta (a special - spot prawn over chitarra nero) was also done beautifully. Try the chocolate-hazelnut budino before you leave...
Want to go. Family-owned place, great breakfasts. Recommended by Alberto.
Want to go - wood-fired italian style bread. Via Claudia.
Exceptional North African cuisine in a low-lit, atmospheric setting. Pastilla was memorable on both occasions I've had dinner there.
Delicious Greek sandwiches and salads in a bright, casual space. Frozen yogurt with honey is perfection.
Ethical, community-minded bakery serving a nice selection of reasonably priced breads and pastries. 'X roll' (whole wheat sourdough with a daily veg/cheese combination) hit the spot.
Waterfront, fantastic views.

So excited for Greg, the baker behind Neighbor. His beautiful brick and mortar is finally open. Particularly noteworthy are the ginger pull, morning buns, and veggie tarts. A must visit. Serving De La Paz coffee. Room for seating!

A (very cool) bar in the midst of the Long Now's library of books needed to restart civilization. You can't go wrong with a Hemingway daiquiri or Regent's draught punch.
I love the concept here - bar with a library of books that would fuel a restart of civilization.
Kouign amann, hands down.
Want to go to quench French pastry cravings (of the Pierre Hermé variety).

Want to go. Serves Josie Bakery bread in a light and airy space
Want to go. Burmese food truck usually on 3rd and Harrison. Would like to try the split pea tofu and pork sung salad
Very popular and well-regarded Burmese restaurant in the Inner Richmond. Tea leaf salad and pumpkin pork stew are wonderful. No reservations, so be prepared for a wait!
Want to go for the rainbow salad. Popular Burmese place, expect a wait.
Best Burmese in the area.
Want to go for the ginger salad and 'special noodles'
Want to go for the pumpkin curries. Nepalese owner grows most of the vegetables in his own organic garden in Sebastapol.
Beautiful modern cafe in a flatiron storefront on Columbus. Lots of light.

The teleme scarpinocc with aceto balsamico transported me back to the cheese room of a parmigiano maker near Modena. Needless to say, most pastas are quite outstanding, and even the non-flour-based dishes can shine.
Want to go. Pasta menu looks incredible, and has multiple rave reviews.
Pistachio raspberry croissant, wow...
Love this space - bright, with tall ceilings and wood and tufted leather banquettes. Wonderful spot to write sans wifi.
Classic California plates and stoneware you can find, used at Chez Panisse, all made in Sausalito and SF.

Middle eastern grocery store with just about anything you might need packed into a small space in the Mission. Friendly, helpful owners who can guide your choice amongst the 4-5 different types of za'atar (!). Great selection of bulk spices, plus dried chamomile flowers and rose petals.
Want to go. Looks like a nice shop with a mix of books, handcrafted jewelry, and homegoods
These are the best tacos in San Francisco. Go now! Generally open Friday nights, check @eatloqui on Twitter for details.
